About Nyree

Well acclaimed metal artisan Nyree Louise Smith. Nyree has spent 30 of her 54 years working in the very versatile world of metalwork. Her skills include: welding, industrial design, metal fabrication and ancient techniques such as blacksmithing, and tin smithing. These skills have been refined through artist-in-residence postings in Spain and England, during a Churchill Trust fellowship in 2001, and also study grants from the Australian Council for the Arts, The George Alexander and Ian Potter Foundations.

Blacksmithing for Beginners

If you've ever wanted to try blacksmithing, here's your chance. Only 5 spots are available for this rare opportunity to learn this ancient art in the beautiful garden workshop at the Lismore Art Space.
Class Project: Pair of Decorative S hooks
You will learn about different forge types before we fire-up a coke fuelled forge to explore different blacksmithing techniques of twisting and "drawing-out" steel to create your unique pair of S hooks.
What to Bring and Wear
Please bring or buy PPE required for the class:
- Dust mask,
- Safety goggles or spectacles,
- Ear muffs or ear plugs (class 5 minimum),
- Work gloves
The above items can be bought on the day; PPE Pack: $10.00 (face mask, spectacles and ear plugs), cotton work gloves: $5.00
- Pen or pencil to take notes, paper supplied,
- Leather work books, preferably steel capped,
- Cotton work clothes,
- Long hair tied back and fingernails trimmed.

This is an excellent course for beginners wanting to get the know-how on basic carpentry, including: PPE, measuring & marking, timber cutting with a reciprocating saw, bandsaw and jigsaw, drilling & power sanding. The aim is to gain valuable power tool knowledge, experience and technique so you can confidently embark on your own projects, especially with recycled materials.
Class Project: Artistic Garden Bench
Built entirely out of recycled timber, this simple garden bench, can be tailored to the student's design with the highly versatile power tools we will be exploring.
